There is an increasing air of insecurity that shows up in today's world. Parents are more scared for their children, for the safety of the children, and so on. Gated communities keep on popping up in more cities, people are warned against strangers. Some of the common stories relate to not letting strangers into the house for any reason, with the fear that once they come into the house, some trouble could happen.
Consider the following weird story, where a door to door magazine seller came into the house and made a sales pitch which was astounding, and liable to get the seller a jail term; you would never think that a normal person would make such demands as the person was making (link to article):

The man, Jerad Michael (pictured at left), who was peddling magazine subscriptions, allegedly forced his way into a woman's home, and refused to leave unless the woman either "submitted to drug use and sexual activity" or bought what he was selling, reports TV Station WCYB in Bristol, Va.
The woman said that she bought the magazines and promptly called the police. Arnold was charged with common law robbery, and was booked under a $20,000 bond.

Weird news - Man spies on his wife at home, using cameras

Believing your partner to be unfaithful is one of the most common reasons for divorces, as well as violence inside the home. A marriage is a coming together of people, but it does not mean that a person totally loses all their rights, including a right to privacy. Won't it feel creepy when you get to know that every action of yours is getting recorded by the spouse who wants to find some evidence of your disloyalty; and this is even more so when there are already tensions in the house.
In this case, the man believed that his wife was cheating on him, and had installed a number of spy cameras inside the house, trying to catch his wife cheating on him in some way, and when she detected the cameras, she was horrified (link to article):

Police said around 2pm on Tuesday, when Mahendran was out on duty, Kamala found a few spy cameras "hidden in different objects," in the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Shocked, she confronted Mahendran about it when he returned home but was allegedly insulted. Kamala then decided to seek divorce but Mahendran refused and said he was ready to talk, police said.On Wednesday, Kamala lodged a complaint with the Ambattur police who registered a case under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act and IPC Sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 290 (punishment for public nuisance).
Police said Mahendran allegedly suspected the fidelity of his wife and often ill treated her. The couple frequently quarrelled over trivial issues and after the confrontation on Tuesday "Kamala said she would live separately and went away," a police officer said. However, Mahendran convinced her and brought her home the same day, the officer said. The couple have a seven-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.

Weird news - Man tried to sober up after being drunk, but lands up in the wrong house

Imagine being so drunk that you end up in the wrong house. A lady was sleeping in her own house when she heard the sound of running water (not something that would inspire any sort of security or trust), and called the police. It turned out there was indeed an intruder in her own house, somebody who had taken a shower in the house. When the police turned up, they found the man, now dressed, sitting in the verandah. It was then that the man realized that he was in the wrong house - after being totally drunk, he entered the house thinking it was his own house, and then took a bath to sober up.
It was after being confronted by the police that the man realized that he had entered the wrong house, and was then very heavily embarrassed about what he had done (link to article):

The man got lost on the way to his house in Katherine on Wednesday night. He walked into the home and took a shower in an attempt to sober up. The 34-year-old householder was asleep upstairs. She woke up, heard the water running and frantically rang the police. When officers arrived, they found the 42-year-old sitting on the woman's verandah - dressed again.
The man was taken into protective custody to sleep off his big night. "The woman was just happy for us to take him away," Supt Shean said. "She thought he was a burglar."

Man kills burglar with sharp sword - defense of your home is perfectly legal

There are certain cases where being able to kill somebody else can be defended in court; one case is when you are killing in self-defense, another case is when, in the United States, you encounter a robber in your home, and in the course of defending your home, you kill the intruder.
Imagine a case when a person intrudes into a house, especially a house where there have been things stolen, and then finds himself encountering a sword wielding resident of the house who is ready to confront you.
In this case, the resident of the house used the sword to deadly effect, killing the intruder. The police normally have trouble arresting the residents involved in such incidents, since a person has the right to defend his home. (link to article):

Baltimore homicide detectives don’t believe a Johns Hopkins University student had “the intent to kill” when he used a samurai sword to confront an intruder behind his home, a police spokesman said Thursday. John Pontolillo, 20, a junior chemistry major from New Jersey, killed the man with a single blow early Tuesday after police said the suspected burglar lunged at him.
Pontolillo has not been charged in the death of Donald D. Rice, 49, who had a long rap sheet of burglary arrests and was released from jail just two days before the altercation. Prosecutors will determine whether charges are appropriate after consulting with police, a process that could take weeks.

After the bitterness of a divorce, it has been known to happen that the couple make up in many cases, in some cases going to the extent of getting back together, or in other cases, becoming friends who can depend on each other for many items. However, the situation described below can be pretty rare, after all, how often do you know of a wife re-marrying, and then moving in with her new husband into the home of her ex-husband. When she and Craig Thompson, 42, were going through a divorce in 2005, this was not a deal either of them could have imagined striking. It was a messy divorce, the kind involving a custody dispute. But once they ironed out that battle, agreeing to joint custody, Thompson-Arce said they were able to move on and forward.
Soon after the Florida wedding, the new lovebirds flew into a financial mess. She had left a job, and as soon as she found another (a temp position), her 22-year-old husband was fired from his higher-paying gig. They fell behind in rent. The bills stacked up. The credit card debt grew. In walked the ex with an offer, just in time for Christmas. Thompson, an 18-year bakery employee at Wal-Mart, lives in a three-bedroom, one-bath home. "I knew they were having money problems, so I just asked them to move in," he said. "I figured I'd get to see my girls, my daughters, more often. And Nicole said yes right away."

As people get older, they need more care. In winter, having adequate facilities and heating is an important part of that need. So what do you think about a lady who took her 84 year old mother out of a nursing home, and put her in a home alone where there was no one to take care of her, where the toilet facilities were not working, where there were a huge number of animals and the old lady was depending on the heat from the huge number of cats to keep warm:

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- About 50 cats, 20 ducks and 15 turkeys were taken from a New Smyrna Beach home, and a woman was arrested after her 84-year-old mother told authorities that she kept warm by covering herself with the animals, according to Volusia County sheriff's deputies. Mary Bosket, 54, was arrested on a charge of neglect to the elderly after her mother was found on Thanksgiving Day at the Glencoe Road home, which was in deplorable conditions and did not have a working heater, deputies said.
In one of the bedrooms, the deputy said he found caged turkeys, although one was wandering freely around the room. In another bedroom, ducks were found, along with an empty kid's swimming pool. A dog was in a third bedroom, where its feces had piled up, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Several geese, ducks and chickens were found in the back yard, deputies said. The only toilet in the home did not work and the sinks would not drain water, deputies said.

The lady could not answer questions as to why she had taken her mother out of the nursing home, and kept her this way, and was eventually arrested. It was good that deputies found the old lady, else there was a good chance that she could have died.

Very creepy, imagine if in your apartment, you find that stuff keeps vanishing without a trace and no one could have come from outside to do the stealing. Enough to make a person believe that the apartment is haunted; however, to the Japanese man who witnessed this happening, he used the wonders of modern technology to find the truth. This 57 year old man setup a hidden camera and found that a woman had been living in a closet that had not been used for quite some time:

A Japanese man who was mystified when food kept disappearing from his kitchen, set up a hidden camera and found an unknown woman living secretly in his closet, Japanese media said on Friday. The 57-year-old unemployed man of Fukuoka in southern Japan called police on Wednesday when the camera sent pictures to his mobile phone of an intruder in his home while he was out on Wednesday, the Asahi newspaper said on its Website.

what a concept; imagine not knowing that a woman had been living in your home for so long.

Newspaper guy finds wife pinned under dead husband

In a strange occurrence that must have been very distressing and traumatic for her, a lady was pinned in her home under the much-heavier dead body of her husband. 84-year-old Blanche Roberts, lay pinned under the body of her 77 year husband Fred for a long time, from Wednesday evening to when she was eventually found on Sunday. Fred had apparently died of a heart attack:

Newspaper carrier Bruce Pitts knew the elderly couple only by the prayers the wife made for him while he was working at night and in bad weather, but he felt something was wrong when the papers piled up outside their home. "It was never like them to leave a newspaper in their tube," Pitts said Tuesday. "That wonderful, small voice inside me said, 'This isn't right."'
Pitts then eased open an unlocked side door and saw the couple about two feet inside, 84-year-old Blanche Roberts helpless looking right back at Pitts. Her right leg was pinned beneath the body of her 77-year-old husband Fred, who apparently had died last Wednesday evening of a heart attack after mowing the lawn. "The good Lord was with her. She was not scared, wasn't panicking," Pitts said during a telephone interview. "She was conscious, talking. Just peaceful. It was remarkable."

It was good for Blanche that she was found by Pitts, a concerned person. She was apparently incapable of removing the dead weight of her husband's body and would have continued suffering.

Sitting on a toilet for 2 years

Police and medical help personnel can come across many strange things, but this particular one would have been something that even they would not have expected. They reached a home in Kansas in response to a call to help - and what did they find ? They found a lady who had been sitting on a toilet for 2 years, and who was stuck on the toilet seat. Her skin had apparently grown around the seat, and the personnel had to pry the seat off and take it with her to hospital where it was removed. She was not cooperative during this period, but did finally agree to go to the hospital:

Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said it appeared the 35-year-old Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat. She initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital. "We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."
Whipple said investigators planned to present their report Wednesday to the county attorney, who will determine whether any charges should be filed against the woman's 36-year-old boyfriend. The boyfriend called police on February 27 to report that "there was something wrong with his girlfriend," Whipple said, adding that he never explained why it took him two years to call. Police found the clothed woman sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to her mid-thigh. She was "somewhat disoriented," and her legs looked like they had atrophied, Whipple said.

Her boyfriend must be equally weird, given that it took him 2 years to realize that maybe things were strange and that he needed help to resolve things.

Couple re-united by illness

In a bitter-sweet affair, a couple married for a decade, had separated (but not divorced) more than 5 years back. They were seeing other people, and had divorce proceedings underway. But then a life-threatening situation brough the relationship alive again.
When the husband was hospitalized with kidney failure, the wife offered one of hers. When they had married, she had agreed to donate one if required; and she had known that he might need one because he had had juvenile diabetes. So, when the need came, even though they were separated, she still stood by her promise.

A house full of garbage

In a tragedy at a house that left investigators stumped, an elderly woman was found in a dehydrated condition in a house buried underneath a pile of debris, garbage and animal feces in a home. An elderly man was found dead. The woman was found after fire-fighters went to the two-story house in Long Island, New York, after relatives said that they could not reach her.
When they reached the house, they found every room piled high with debris mixed with human and animal waste, in some rooms, all the way to the ceiling.
The investigators were not sure how long they were like this, but neighbours had seen them last over a week ago. A strong stench was in the house. The house now sports a sign on the front saying that it was unfit for human occupancy. Read the CNN story.
