Weird news - massive swarm of ladybugs

Sometimes we come across natural behavior that seems incredible, and weird in some ways. The mass movement of animals is something that happens in many species, but when we come across it, it is an awe-inspiring experience. In earlier times, before man intervened in the environment, there were vast herds of large animals moving across the land (these were disrupted because of man settling in there, or shooting many of them), and in the skies, there are these huge movement of birds or insects as a part of their migration. Most of these are not seen now, and the ones that are seen are seemingly so out of the ordinary and incredible that they become news, such as this movement of ladybugs over California (link to article):

A huge blob that appeared on the National Weather Service’s radar wasn’t a rain cloud, but a massive swarm of ladybugs over Southern California. Meteorologist Joe Dandrea says the array of bugs appeared to be about 80 miles (129 kilometers) wide as it flew over San Diego Tuesday. But Dandrea tells the Los Angeles Times that the ladybugs are actually spread throughout the sky, flying at between 5,000 and 9,000 feet (1,525 and 2,745 meters), with the most concentrated group about 10 miles (16 kilometers) wide.

Weird news - Ants inside a girl's ears

There are all sorts of horror movies about insects or creatures that make their living space inside a person; or take over the body and start using the body for controlling it and mass-reproducing. Remember Alien, where the alien does all sort of things. There are numerous other bad movies that are on the same subject.
However, once in a while we come across a weird case where some kind of animal infestation manifests itself in a human body; sometimes it does not even appear real - but then, one has to believe others who has seen this to happen. For example, consider this case where this girl detects some pain in her ear and then it seems like ants start to come out from ear, and this is something that doctors have seen but don't have an answer for why this has happened (link to article):

elieve it or not, big ants seem to have made a 12-year-old girl's ear their home. At least 10 to 15 of them are emerging from her ear every day . Even doctors, who treated the girl, are shocked to see such a case, for which they have not found any precedent in medical history . However, she does not feel any pain despite the presence of the ants. The doctors, who checked her ear through laparoscopic camera, could not find any 'queen ant' inside the ear who might have laid eggs.

Weird news - New carnivorous plant found by scientists

The common association of plants is that they grow in their place, taking in sunlight and being easily affected by factors such as weather, the grazing action of animals, or even somebody just starting to cut the plants. The number of people who know that animals can be carnivorous as well (just some selected plants) is very low, with some of these plants being the pitcher plant or the Venus fly trap, which actually catch insects and other small creatures.
But as scientists keep on finding new plants, it always astounds people about the complexity of life in the plant world as well, with plants being able to adapt to different conditions, and also having evolved to not only make energy from sunlight and nutrients, but also be able to eat insects (link to article):

Scientists have discovered a new carnivorous plant which has sticky leaves beneath the ground to help it capture and digest worms. The rare plant Philcoxia minensis is found in Brazil's tropical savannahs region which is rich in biodiversity and highly in need of conservation.
They fed the plant nematodes loaded with the isotope nitrogen-15, atoms of which have one more neutron than regular nitrogen-14. Then, they placed these Caenorhabditis elegans worms on top of underground leaves of plants kept in a lab setting.
Chemical analysis of the leaves that had been covered in nematodes revealed significant amounts of nitrogen-15, suggesting the plant broke down and absorbed the worms.

Rat eating plant found in Phillipines

Not many people know that there are plants that eat meat as well. Say again ? Plants that eat meat ? Yes. There have plants such as the pitcher plant and sundew that eat meat. But humans need not be worried as yet. In a recent discovery by scientists, a plant that can eat rats has been found on Mount Victoria in Palawan, central Philippines. The plant has been named in honour of Sir David Attenborough. The plant has a pitcher which attracts insects and rats, and then takes nutrition from these animals (link to article):

The new discovery measures up to 30 centimeters in diameter and is formed by a tendril which inflates into a large cup-shaped trap. McPherson told CNN: "Around the mouth of the pitcher are secretions of nectar which attracts insects and small animals. The rim has lots of waxy downward-pointing ridges which help prey fall directly into the pitcher.
"These plants grow in really harsh areas where soil quality is very poor -- often pure gravel or sand. Catching insects allows the plant to augment nutrients that it otherwise wouldn't have access to." "These plants have evolved to catch insects. But on rare occasions they do catch rats and mice. The first reports of these plants catching rats was made in the 19th century by a British explorer called Spenser St John," McPherson said.

This is very interesting for those people who see a very clear separation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. If a plant can itself eat meat, then that separation starts to wither away.
